Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if that kind of stuff happened here. There's plenty of unrest building up.

To be honest, I'm surprised it hasn't happened here already. But with Obama's lies and nonsense (pretending everything's ok with the economy), I think people are really buying into it for the most part.

Where is the Army? It's obvious the police are HELPLESS to do anything about this. Once the Army shows up people are more inclined to go home.
I am not to privy on UK Military Structure but in the US the Governor of the State has the ability to call up the National Guard which rolls in with a couple Humvee's and disperses everyone. That, American's right to keep firearms, and the "Castle Doctrine" (The right to use Deadly Force against any invader to your property, not law in every state but honored in most within reason) are a couple reasons why we don't see many riots of this scale in the US. This whole situation is awful. Hopefully it can be resolved.

I'm still scratching my head that these people are rioting over the death of a potential gang member. Where I'm from, people celebrate that.

Well outside of the Civil Rights skirmishes across the country, the only real Riot this country had was LA. A couple dozen people were murdered, Hundreds of Millions of Dollars in property damage, hundreds injured -- but once the Marines were driving through South Central everything calmed down.
But, not to justify it, even that was actual Civil Unrest over Rodney King -- this stuff in London just seems like kids looking to steal from the neighbors.

Well, if something like this can't mobilize them, then you have to argue the effectiveness of such unit at all. Consider the cost of keeping the unit in the first place and keeping it trained and equipped. How much have these riots cost people already? If they have anything like the national guard here, then it needs to be implemented yesterday.

The news at the moment is talking about 'good Samaritans' taking to the streets to clean up. At least this is bringing out the good in some people.

These riots aren't about the dead guy at all, that was what triggered the initial outburst. Now its just looting and rioting for the sake of rioting.
London has been quite calm tonight - mainly due to the fact that 16,000 police officers are in the City ready for anything to kick off. However there is trouble escalating in other cities all around the country. As for the army or TA, the government is relectant to use them, partly because the fact that most of the people involved are teenagers, and also they're still facing criticism from the heavy-handed way they handled the student protests and anti-cut protests back in November and March.
