Default Jets Fine Coach Ryan $50, 000 for Obscene Gesture (UPDATED 02/03/2010)

Jets Fine Coach Ryan $50, 000 for Obscene Gesture

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jets coach Rex Ryan has been fined $50,000 by the team for making an obscene gesture at a mixed martial arts event last weekend.
The team's decision Tuesday comes after a smiling Ryan was caught gesturing by a cell phone camera at the competition in Sunrise, Fla., on Saturday night.
Ryan apologized the next day, calling his actions ''stupid and inappropriate.'' General manager Mike Tannenbaum had said the organization was disappointed and would address the matter internally.
The coach also could be fined by the NFL under its personal conduct policy.
Ryan led the Jets to the AFC championship game in his first year as an NFL head coach.

UPDATE

Over reacting or a bull in a china shop? You decide. My feeling is, yeah, maybe a little inappropriate, but it was a martial arts competition and this is football. Fighting and football are violent sports, not for the slight of heart, and besides, the Dolphin fans are from another place in the universe. If you've never been around them, you are in for something strange. I say let it go.

Considering the Dolphin fan's actions, I bet it took great restraint not to beat him into the ground. I'm proud that Rex had the self control to only give him the finger.

Tennesee's owner got a 250k fine when flipped the double bird to buffalo fans from his owners box...good thing this wasnt at an NFL-snactioned event, or the fine woulda been similar, if not more, maybe even a suspension.

All this 'political correctness' is getting wierd and over reactive....I wonder what ole Rex's pop, Buddy Ryan would've gotten if he did this in 1985 as part of the Bears?

I still love Rex for doing it though...

Buddy wouldn't have done this. Buddy would've clocked the guy.

The fine was in the neighborhood of what I had expected. I can see why Rex or any other human would have done this and I love it.....however....he is an NFL headcoach and is representing his team whether he is coaching or not....thats just the nature of the beast....so he does need to show a little restraint
