Hi Jets fans, Chargers fan from San Diego here. I just have a very simple question: If the Jets were without a head coach and you had to choose between Norv Turner or Marty Schottenheimer as your head coach, which guy would you rather hire? Which guy do you think is a better coach? This has been a hot button issue on our Chargers message board with a lot of bias involved, so I am seeking the opinion of unbiased fans from other teams. So if you had to choose a coach for the Jets, Schottenheimer or Norv Turner? Which guy do you think is better? Thanks!

Greetings from New Jersey!
We already have a Schottenheimer, and he isn't the most popular offensive coordinator amongst us fans. I'd probably have to go with Marty anyway. The Chargers have awesome players and don't seem to go much farther than anyone else. I blame that on coaching. Marty seemed to have more success than Turner is having.

Hmm, Marty Schottenheimer: He holds the peculiar distinction of being the NFL coach with the most wins since 1966 to never coach a team in a Super Bowl (which was first held in that year). So I'd say the guy was due. I'd hire Marty :-)
Oh, and I'd forgotten the reason he was fired from the Chargers so I loked it up, and still don't understand why he was fired. He led the team to a 14-2 record only to lose in the first playoff game after a bye. Yeah, hire this guy :-) Sounds like he got a raw deal. I wonder if he stayed away from coaching on purpose because of this. I might :-) Last edited by The Green Titan; 12-01-2009 at 06:53 PM. |

Uh, that was Schottenheimer! Did Turner do that as well?

I was just looking through each coach's records. Marty has a boatload of wins. Norv took over a 14-2 team and had an 11-5 year, then an 8-8 year with basically the same players, as far as I know. I still find it odd that in Marty's last year as a head coach he went 14-2 and has not been hired yet. That's probably more due to the current trend in the NFL of hiring young guys than to his record. I'd be willing to give him another shot.
