Yes it is true, we lost Brett Favre, not to an injury but to the New York media, fans and coaches.
The timeline: First few games of the season all the pessimists were saying: "Farve lost it", "Farve stinks", "Farve is too old", "Too many interceptions", "He looks uncomfortable." Mid-season we started to win a few but they were close games. But a win wasn't enough for the media. People were saying: "We could do this with Chad.", "Jets are winning because of all the other acquisitions", "We might win games but we'll lose in the playoffs with Farve", "Farve throws too many INT's", "Look at Chad play down in Miami." I personally was enjoying the improving Jets and enjoying the slightly fun to watch games. Second half of the season the Jets started to gel. The finally beat New England AWAY! They beat Tennessee, no crushed Tennesee away from home. They were FUN to watch. The defense was getting lots of rest and staying fresh. T.Jones had less compressed field to work with and started looking like a Pro Bowl player, not taking anything away from Thomas, but the spread out field had to help. The New York fans and media continued to want perfection: "We won in NE because Brady was out." (Note: Hindsight is showing that NE is playing outstanding WITHOUT Brady) The media chanted on, "We might go to the playoffs but Farve will lose it for us with an INT.". I wonder how many of those media writers, if true football fans and not story pimps would go back to how it was when we didn't play scared? Now that the Jets have a winning record, the Coaches are really scared of the big bad New York Media. What if Brett Farve makes a mistake and the media comes down on me, I might be fired? The coaches gave in and continued throttling back the Favre making him play a game he has never played in his career. Effectively SHUTTING DOWN the leagues higest scoring offense. Yes we were the leagues highest scoring offense. But they started playing scared of that dreaded INT. Favre joked, yeah they seem to follow me whereever I go but so do wins, and fun to watch games. The media and fans got their wish. The Jets are back to the high percentage short passing game that can't score points. But they are throwing slightly fewer interceptions!! Still throwing them, but far fewer!! A Success!! *note sarcasm* Favre is not playing the type of game that made him a Pro Bowl player. Our offense now looks almost EXACTLY like it did with Chad last year, and -dunk short passes, less yards per run ability, and a tight compressed field. And now the fans and media are chanting, chanting louder and louder: "Farve stinks get rid of him.", "His arm is getting tired.", "Why aren't we running T.Jones he is the best.", "Where did our defense go?". Now please consider this.. I am not a football coach nor am I qualified to be one. But this is my humble opinion... Farve was never going to play like in the early 90's but he still had game, enough game to give the Jets a CHANCE. He had confidence and a contagious desire to win. His teammates have made it clear that Favre helped made it fun to play, gave them confidence, and motived them, made them believe they could win any game. His gunslinging play made it HARD to play defense against. The "D" had to cover 50% more field. Remember how receivers used to be open? When playing a small field our receivers are not getting open as much and are covered tighter and Farve is either forced to thread needles or take a sack. It is harder for T. Jones to run, but he is doing a surprisingly good job considering defenses are playing up on us more every week. Or defense is exhausted, who was that big defensive player we had that made the difference? I haven't heard his name mentioned anymore wonder if he is tired? We are no longer taking the lead because we can't score, so we are forced into a throwing game leaving Thomas Jones uderutilized. We are falling further behind and Favre is faced with the decision to force some balls and give us a chance or lose. His INT's went down but so has his productivity. With the tight coverage it is a miracle he is getting by with only one INT a game, not to mention short pass INT's can be lethal. Longer INT's are terrible not as lethal and if lucky more like a punt. New York got what they wanted, they got rid of Brett Favre (in spirit) and got their Same Old Jets back. They will lose him physically soon he won't stay beyond this season, I sure wouldn't. And I leave with this statement: The Jets fans will soon be able to sleep at night no longer having to worry about losing a game because of an interception. |

Our coaching staff sucks!
This is not Bretts fault at all. |

There was talk on how Favre would handle the NY media knowing the media will bash at every possible opportunity. That's the extra task that NY teams have to overcome. Record would say that not just Favre, but the team has succumb to the effects of the pressuring NY media. Darn them... The true mark of a championship caliber team is in how they bounce back. I think Favre has stood the test in the post-game conference, saying that yea we lost, but there's three more games. I feel he will do whatever he can to win, thats what he does. I saw it in his game on Sunday, but not from the rest of the team.
The vets need to step up, as they know what it takes to be winners. This Jets team have others that don't know, so they need to bring out a pad and pen and learn. These last two games, with the media, yea its harsh, but i bet it helps to have them learn quick as its hard lessons to learn. If they want to keep that swagger, and are learning that its more than feeling good to do that. The Jets have the opportunity to prove the media wrong. they're on a stage right now with everyone watching. |

I know exactly what you mean mate, especially in the SanFran game, the Offense was being played as if we still had Chad, i think Mangingi needs to loosen up - a lot, and talk to Favre, TJ etc. ask them how they want to play and how they feel most comfortable playing then add his input.
At the moment all the plays are short conservative plays, perfect for Chad 'pea-shooter' Pennington. But for gods sake we have Gunslinger Favre, lets use him!

DomUK;
Exactly! Why did we go get him if there is no intent on playing to his abilities? That SanFran game was probably the most painful/upsetting sorry excuse for a game I think we have all seen in a LONG time, maybe ever for me. At least you wouldn't be surprised by that game if it happened LAST season... It looked like last years offense in slow motion- only cause our line is better so it takes longer for a sack. Cmon, I could make better play calls- SERIOUSLY! I really hope we win out, but I am VERY nervous about these games. |

Its a horrible situation to be in, remember how good it felt when we buttmunched the Saints, when we beat the Titans AND Pats - we were world beaters.
In the last 2 weeks we've lost 2 games we really should've won (or at least tried to). Now we have 3 games left and are tied at the top with the Tunas and Pats. How bad would it feel if Chad and his fish got into the playoffs and we didn't. I don't even wanna think about it. Obama's whole campaign was a message to Mangini: CHANGE

I am sure the media does have an affect some players and possibly coaches. I realize these are professionals getting paid to play/coach football but they are still human beings with feelings and susceptible to loss of confidence. I'm surprised that Favre has handled the criticsm well, I personally didn't think he would be able to. Someone brilliantly said it in another post, "Farve must have ice running through his veins he appears as relaxed after winning in New England as he does after throwing an interception.". |

this thread says a lot. i noticed the huge change from wins to loss and more conservative passing. and i really do agree with the long int is like a punt. why not chance a deep pass for a TD or int rather then either not convert on downs or throw a short int.

Brett won't return because this brand of offense could not be fun for him. Throwing the ball 5 yds on every play is not what he envisioned when he decided to unretire.
Mangini and Schotty will manage to do what no team has been able to do and that's make Brett NOT want to play football. |
