Default Assessing the free-agent market

Quote:
Since the draft ended, a lot of people have been asking about the top players still available in the free-agent market. The pickings are slim, but GM Mike Tannenbaum has been known to find bargains. Right now, the Jets still have at least three needs -- safety, wide receiver and right tackle. We could expand the list, but we'll keep it to three for now.

Based on the Scouts, Inc., rankings here are the top unrestricted free agents, including their last team and Scouts, Inc., grade:

WIDE RECEIVER

Braylon Edwards, 49ers -- 78
Roy Williams, Bears -- 72
Plaxico Burress, Jets -- 70
Mark Clayton, Rams -- 62

SAFETY

Bob Sanders, Chargers -- 75
Abe Elam, Cowboys -- 73
Sean Jones, Bucs -- 72
Gerald Sensabaugh, Cowboys -- 72
Melvin Bullitt, Colts -- 71
Jim Leonhard, Jets -- 70
Deon Grant, Giants -- 70

OFFENSIVE TACKLE

Vernon Carey, Dolphins -- 82*
Kareem McKenzie, Giants --80
Max Starks, Steelers -- 72
Adam Goldberg, Rams -- 67
Brandon Keith, Cards -- 67

* Played guard last season, but was a right tackle before that.

Carey is the player I'd most like for us to sign out of those available. I don't have high expectations for Hunter but even if he excels in the new system and Carey is just a depth signing I think it would be worth it.

If we could get Braylon at the league minimum I'd jump on it and cut Turner, the signing of Hill makes Braylon icing on the cake but if the price is right ice away.

None of the safties appeal to me, Is Atogwe gone?

The Jets should sign Carey. I have said this since the beggining of free agency. He would be another Damien Woody type to come in, and would fix the Jets right side protecting Marky from the first time he plays.

And the Jets should give Bob Sanders a shot. Despite all the injuries, he'd be at low cost and when he's healthy, he's an absolute BEEAAASSTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea. Having Sanders, Landry, and Leonhard on the same team would make things easier on Dr. Andrews' billing department.

I think we are okay at safety, after drafting Bush and Allen, and signing Landry and T.Wilson...and retaining E.Smith. Now it's just a matter of figuring out who starts and who plays where.

If anything, I could see Leonhard come back, mainly to mentor the rookie safeties and add depth once he recovers from injury.

Although Carey could be good addition, it seems like the Jets are not planning on signing any more players to take up a starting role. I think they are confident with either Hunter or Ducasse starting at RT. Otherwise, they would have signed a starter at that position already (OR DRAFTED ONE!).

Sorry guys, i don't see us signing anyone who will see much playing time on the field.

I think Bray might still be a possibility, and I wouldn't mind seeing them take a minimum flyer on M. Bullit.

I do not see them picking up any of these FAs.
What I do see, and Tanny has done this many times in the
past years, is pick up a player or players from other
teams that are available after the teams cut players
to get down to the limit.
