Default Targeting cousins in 2018 or settling for prospects from 2018 qb class

Wondering what yah thought..i hear alotta guys wanting to go the sam darnold(if he even infact decides to enter the draft) or the other big 2 qbs from 2018 draft class..i personally wouldnt mind throwing the bank & investing in cousins at qb for the long haul...hes proven as a solid qb in this league..

I think he could be a great addition but I don't see the Redskins letting him go anywhere.

Actually for me it's too early to even think about either of those options, because that's still a long way off considering how fast circumstances in the NFL and the college level change. Injury could put any of these prospects off limits. Skill levels sometimes diminish for various reasons. Another player not even on the radar might become extraordinary before the draft. They might even pull a Tebow and decide that baseball is a better option. I hear it pays better. In short there are too many variables for me to even go down this road at this time. Yo did ask what we thought jetsfanQ. This is what I think.

There are pros and cons to both choices.
Darnold has to show major improvement to climb up to the #1 draft spot.He is down to 3 on most big boards but it's so early that by the end of the year , all 3 could drop and others could rise, some no one is even watching could rise. Cousins is an intriguing option.
I have seen alot of fan post on other Jet forums about him.
Look at his career and he was terrible his first 3 years but developed nicely and had good back to back seasons yet everyone is writing Hack off before he has taken a single snap. The biggest pro to signing cousins would be the potential to trade our high pick for a haul of draft picks in the next 2 drafts. I doubt Washington let's Cousins walk and if they do, Cleveland would likely outbid us and they have a much more attractive roster then we do at this point.
Could Hack surprise this season and eliminate the need to go after a QB? Could Mac n Bowles use another year on his development then feel confident in him and still make the big trade down for picks?
There's so much that can and will happen between now and April but it's fun to explore the possibilities.

I suppose that if we weren't dreamers we wouldn't be Jets fans.

Default Hack

What if Hackenberg looks good & the Jets are still in position to draft one of the top 3 QB's in the 2018 draft...would the Jets still draft a QB in the 1st round? I think they would. This is likely to be a long painful season, but I'm still looking forward to the games to see how our draft picks do.

A lot of us are looking forward to this season even though most of us aren't expecting a great season by any means. I believe that the Jets will take another QB next draft just because that's likely going to be ( still ) a position of need. If Hack turns out to be our guy there will still be two that can be cut to make room for a possible better option in the wings. We are in a good position with our cap now and haven't over paid these young players so we can see how they do this season. The players that do well will stay and the not so great players will depart. The Jets are now, finally, in a position to build a young, competitive team. Let's just hope they stay on track. P.S. Rumor has it that Darnold, who many on here like has made it clear that he believes that the Jet's are deliberately tanking and that he wouldn't play for a team that would do that. If picked he would just stay in school instead. Something to think about for all concerned. Also just because he's number one now doesn't mean he will still be when the draft arrives in 2018. Cousins might be available to us next season but I believe he'd rather be with the Niners than the Jets and he wouldn't come cheap. But, yep, I'm really anxious to see how this group develops.

Have to disagree with you regarding Darold.
Reports were that sources claimed he was staying in school for 2 more years. He denied that and said the sources we're wrong.
He was asked about the Suck for Sam slogan being tossed around by several teams,(49s, Brown's,Rams and Jets) His reply was ?I don?t think any team should tank their season because of me. I?m just taking this every day, one day at a time. That?s all I can do.? Never has Darnold mentioned the Jets.
Also Darnold would not have the option to stay in school if Picked by the Jets. At least not as a football player. He would not be eligible by NCAA rules.

You are probably right. Since reading that rumor article, from one of the NY reporters, I have read several other articles that support what you are saying. In a recent article that I read which comes from an ESPN program "The Six" where he was interviewed July 12th he was asked if he really said that and his answer was that he had heard about the suck for Sam slogan and that he wouldn't want any team to tank for him. He didn't mention the Jets specifically. He also said that he hasn't decided yet if he will declare for the 2018 draft. He will listen to the council of his coaches and parents. You are also correct that he couldn't go back to school but he has other options if he doesn't want to play for the team that selects him. They might or might not work to his liking because ultimately the team that drafts him owns the signing rights.

He had a very rough Spring, threw alot of picks and has been working with a QB coach to completely changed his throwing motion and footwork which had already dropped him to second or third on most big boards for next year's draft. If he doesn't regain the top spot, he will likely stay in school another year. Watching his game film, he is way over hyped and would be a project QB, far from a day one starter as earlier reported. He could refuse to play for whoever drafts him but how many times has that happened? Once with Eli and it only worked out for him because the Charges we're willing to trade for Rivers. Payton stayed in school , not to avoid the Jets as you will read on here but because Parcels wouldn't commit to taking him once we secured the first pick. He wanted to play here.
I'm liking the thought of signing Cousins more and more if he becomes available in Free Agency. We can then trade that top pick for multiple picks this year and probably add some next year as well. (The Browns are doing it right). There are some players coming out next year that I love and think would benefit the team. CB McFadden , Derwin James who while a luxury with Adams and Maye is head and shoulders above them and would give Bowles his Buchanan like player, Barkley,Arden Key. There are so many scenarios that having a top pick, and Cousins open up.
It will be interesting to watch how things unfold going forward. I bet we look back at most of what we're thinking now and laugh as the year progress's.
