Our family created a website/Forum site for German Shepherds. Need mods and members.

Thanks!

German Shepherds were my favorite dogs. I have six dogs
now, all from assorted rescue situations.
As much as I still love a German Shepherd, my experience
that I had with the only one I did have was not pleasant.

When she was about 10 she developed the hip problem and for
2 years I watched her drag herself around. Other than that
she was healthy in every other regard. This happens more
often than not and you have to be aware when you get one
that this is a possibility.

There are exceptions to every rule. I had a mastiff since
I was living here in Florida. This was also a rescue situation. They said they only live to
8-10. This one lived to 15.

Yea, we got to doctor about every month- month 1/2 to make sure she is good and her hips are fine. So far they are, but we are doing everything possible to make sure she is healthy. I just hope if we keep her that way she can live 13-16 yrs. In which i think that can happen.

The hip problem doesn't show up until they are much older
although I have heard it happen as early as 5-6. Like I said
there are exceptions to everything so I hope you can get that
many years out of them.

After I retired and was still living in NY, I ran the Humane
Society in the town I lived. This couple had two German
Shepherds that they imported from Hungary. Absolutely
beautiful. They kept getting out of their yard and we
were constantly picking them up. The couple finally
asked us to take them and adopt them but offered them to me
free of charge. I just couldn't go thru again what happened
to my shepherd so I declined but I found them a great home.
In fact I personally visited the home before I authorized
the adoption.
