Default Depth Chart - Secondary

This is an interesting dilemma... We have some prospects who can up end replacing players whom were on the roster last year... With the addition to our safety core looks to be larger we might not have room for the extra DB on the roster...

Corner backs:
Quote:
Darrelle Revis - Starter
Antonio Cromartie - Starter
Kyle Wilson - Starter (NB)

Ellis Lankster - upside knows the defense
Isaiah Trufant - upside knows the defense
Julian Posey - has potential
Donnie Fletcher - practice squad
Ryan Steed - has potential

We all can agree Revis, Cro & Wilson are our starting trio @ CB!!!
Last year, both Lankster & Trufant were good but players like Posey & Steed could replace them...
It all depends on if we are keeping 5 or 6 safeties will we keep 5 or 6 corners... Meaning 5 safeties with 6 corners or vice versa... I think Fletcher could steal the 6th spot, if we keep 6...

Safeties:

Quote:
Yeremiah Bell - Strong Safety
LaRon Landry - Strong Safety
Eric Smith - Spur Safety
Antonio Allen - Spur Safety
Josh Bush - Free Safety
D'Anton Lynn - Free Safety

Interesting enough we have 6 listed with 3 Safety positions available... Two for each position... Can Josh Bush & D'Anton Lynn co-exist as Free Safety? Lynn is more a cover 2 FS while Bush has man press experience and could cover sideline to sideline...

Eric Smith has been used in our own version of the University of South Carolina Gamecock's "Spur" Safety... By bringing in Antonio Allen from South Carolina kinda redefines our safety situation... Some packages in the 4-6 Defense use 3 Safeties; Strong Safety, Box Safety & Cover 2 Free Safety... This could suggest we are going to keep 6 safeties on our roster...

Both Yeremiah & LaRon's contracts are basically guaranteed, giving the impression that they are definite roster spots of the 53 man roster...

Defensive Backs:

Quote:
Royce Adams - practice squad
Tracy Wilson - has potential
Unfortunately for these two and any others that we might sign, there is NOT much room unless an injury takes place... Tracy Wilson if I am correct in my investigation he can not be placed on practice squad considering the number of games he was in last season... But on the other hand rookie Royce Adams should earn a practice squad spot along with Donnie Fletcher CB...

Overall: This should be what our secondary could look like
Quote:
CB - Revis, Cromartie, Wilson, Steed, & Posey
SS - Bell, Landry
FS - Bush, Lynn
BS - Smith, Allen

Both Bush & Lynn can play on the Line of Scrimmage since they played CB in college... Consider Bush a backup NB with Posey #2 behind Revis and Steed #2 behind Cromartie...

To understand D'Anton or compare to an NFL player: Dwight Lowery anyone remember him??? So far in training camp D'Anton has been practicing as a Free Safety...

Can't Wait!!!

With Smith's performance last year and his price tag this year I'd cut him and let Wilson have a shot.

Eric Smith played with an injury all season long, I for one give him the benefit of the doubt...

I think converting LaRon to FS which looks to be what the Jets have planned for him will actually benefit him, instead of him trying to tune up every tight end or receiver he can now make a play on the ball, which could possibly keep him healthy longer, instead of him being a human wrecking ball. I think LaRon and Bell will be the starting safety duo, LaRon FS and Bell SS.

But i do want to see what Josh Bush and D'Lynn have to offer.

Still had 89 tackles and 2-1/2 sacks...played last 5 games with a torn meniscus. He had difficulty covering some of the big athletic TE's like Gronk but NO safety could cover Gronk last year.

Just saying...

Eric Smith is better suited to play:

Quote:
Up at the line the scrimmage like conversion Safety/Linebacker, but his best situation is gunner on special teams... Tag team Antonio Allen, both Smith & Allen can be extra special playing the box or spur position constantly bringing the pressure and setting the edge against the run... I think Antonio Allen can grow into that starting strong safety in the near future but for now we need him to participate on what he is comfortable with...
LaRon Landry has speed to cover sideline to sideline, being that said:

Quote:
To use LaRon as free safety makes more sense... Keeping him less likely to get hurt by playing him in more coverage style situations... Rex likes that ball hawking safety and LaRon brings more intensity but could benefit from this move...
Yeremiah Bell, known for his durability and intelligence:

Quote:
Starting Strong Safety that might be a liability in coverage is not the focal point in this position... He will do what he is best at, blitzing the quarterback and run stuffing... Sure as sure can be as a tackler...
Josh Bush, has potential to play multiple positions:

Quote:
Ability to cover man-press coverage... Played both corner back & safety giving us the advantage to use his abilities either to cover Tight Ends or Slot Receivers... We will see how they tend to use him...
D'Anton Lynn son of RB coach Anthony Lynn:

Quote:
Came out of college as a CB, signed with us to play safety... Still unsure if D'Anton will play as cover 2 free safety or be cover 2 strong safety giving us advantage either end...
Antonio Allen, known for playing spur safety:

Quote:
Again feel this kid provides upside for long term... Might be used box safety or spur position on gang green... Could also be used as gunner on special teams... Long term see him as starting strong safety...
