Default Jets Brass have golden opportunity; Will they go for it?

Carolina Panthers have made a couple of free agent signing putting into question a couple of players could be coveted by Gang Green...

Panthers signed Mike Tolbert yesterday and what is believed Jonathan Stewart seems like that odd man out with DeAngelo Williams fairly new contract...

Also Carolina just signed Haruki Nakumara Free Safety putting into question what to do with Sherrod Martin...

If the Jets want to sew up the secondary after signing LaRon "The Hulk" Landry for one year, this could be exactly what we have been looking for... The Big Splash, Sherrod is that cover Safety we need and a major upgrade from Eric Smith...

Its the Jets Brass to put a package together and make a move for both Jonathan Stewart & Sherrod Martin would give us major flexibility heading into the draft having most of our holes filled...

Thoughts?

Good pickup! I hope someone in the Jets organization is paying attention to this.

A lot will depend on whether the Panthers are real about Nakamura being a starter and what they want for the trade, cap space, etc. but adding Martin alongside Landry would really fix our safety problems (as you say, an upgrade over Eric Smith).

If we could also get Stewart at a reasonable price this would be a great move by front office though my personal preference would be to use the remainder of our cap space on a reasonable OT.

Think with this deal will sew up our secondary, give us that tandem running game we need... Then we can focus in draft for OLB, DL, OT, WR and any other positions they want to supply depth to...

I definitely think we should go for Martin as you suggest, and while I can see the good that bringing Stewart in would provide (he is a solid player that could help us) I am concerned about the seeming lack of willingness to address the OT position. I am unconvinced we will be able to find a starter in the draft and for the safety of our QB Wayne Hunter *cannot* be allowed to start. I think we need a veteran tackle to replace Hunter as starter *and* a draft pick to replace Ducasse who is a complete bust.

My ideal choice would be to grab Martin as you suggest and spend our remaining cap space on a veteran OT like McNeil to replace Hunter as starter and then commit an early to mid round draft pick to an OT who we can train up during 2012.

The one big problem is, The Jets brass have no gold. With the signings we have made, we may have 4-5 mill left, maybe. We will still have to sign our draft picks, even at rookie minimum that could be a couple mil or more.

The Jets Brass currently have just under $7M in cap salary, if they do make this trade both Martin & Stewart have 2012 base salary since Jets seem not to do anything passed 1 year should be fine... IMO!

If we are lucky to get Martin to play Free Safety don't you think they would either dismiss Eric Smith or force him into taking less money... Eric Smitty's contract is NOT guaranteed...

Jets still have two Linebackers that are considered on the block; trade block... {Calvin Pace & Bart Scott} <<< Free Up - $13M Cap Space (If traded); If Cut $16 Dead Money >>> Not worth to just release...
