Who do you see as our starter when Favre retires after we win the SB this year? Don't get me wrong, I hope Brett sticks around for as long as he can but this is hypothetical. Clemens, Ratliff, Ainge, or someone else?

Ratliff. Looked good earlier this year but I don't know about him yet. Not really sure but I won't say Cassel until I see more (I know he's going to get the nod from many of you). He did take over a very good team so with regards to the Patriots I'm wondering who made who look good, the team or Cassel. I'm not convinced by one year.

I know what you mean. I live in NE and the last week and a half when Cassell threw for 400 plus yards in the consecutive games, every Pats fan here was saying that he's the next Tom Brady and this and that, blah, blah, blah. Some even suggested that he be the starter next year because he's "so good" and he's "younger than Brady" and who knows if Brady will ever be back to form after his injury. And now after last week's loss to Pittsburgh they're all calling for his head. But it is hard to gauge exactly what level of quarterbacking he's at.

It will be someone else, if Ratliff was this good, he would be our 2nd QB right now, and don't get me started on Matt "Derek Anderson" Cassel.

And in my opinion, Ratliff looks like our best option so far. I don't think Clemens has the goods, I know it's not fair to judge his performance last year because last season was such a disaster but I don't like what I've seen from him. But I really hope Favre sticks around, he can still play and I've always been a huge fan of his in general.

That's true, why is Clemens higher than him on the depth chart? I would think it's because the Jets invested a 2nd rounder on Clemens if I remember correctly.

I think it's because the Jets don't want to make any statements about their 2nd and 3rd string quarterbacks right now. Especially seeing as how they are so secure with their first one. And Ratliff knows what's coming. Make him compete for that spot.

Clemens is awful, I think this years draft could have some decent QBs slip to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds. Should be able to get someone to compete.

True, but I wouldn't want to start next year or the one after that with a rookie QB. I mean he would have to be exceptional and even then I'd be worried. If Favre left (Dear Lord, please make Brett stay; Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is a Jet Superbowl win and Brett back next year), I'd hope for another seasoned QB to take over until the rookie came of age. But you never know what you're going to get. AKA Keller, Washington when you get someone new!

Not too worried, we have a strong running game and should continue to have one for years, look at Tenn this year.

I don't think we can write off Clemens yet. He was awful in 2007, but so was Chad. An O-line can make all the difference in the world. He may not be the answer, but we don't know that yet.

We have a very strong running game. I'll say, what a difference upgrading your O-Line does. It's night and day from last season to now. TJ's running with power this year, Leon Washington is so explosive and it would've been nice to have Darren Mcfadden in there too. At the time of the draft I posted on the Radar that I really wanted the Jets to get Gholston but now I don't know if that was such a good move. It's still too early to tell.

if they dont sign a veteran i have a large amount of confidence that ratliff will beat out clemens in camp. i would also like brett to stick around for another year but i am also excited to see what we have with ratliff.

He sure was entertaining in preseason, but then again, he was playing against very vanilla defenses. No real game planning happens in preseason. Definitely worth the look though.

Exactly
The Jets most likely haven't made up their mind about Clemens just yet, but like most of us liked what they saw in Ratliff a lot.
Clemens has one more year left on his contract, if they were to announce Ratliff as #2 right now that would be the end of Clemens.
If Favre leaves, and I believe he will, it will be a shoot out in camp. I hope one of these guys has the goods

I wasnt impressed by Clemens last year and Ratliff played with a bunch of scrubs in pre-season.I hope to god Brett will stick around another year to help groom a QB. I dont know what QB that will be, but we need a QB for the future

If Favre does retire(which I don't think he will), it will be Clemens job to lose. I think sitting back and learning from Favre will do him a lot of good.

Learning from Favre doesn't give him the instincts to win, which he never showed.

Couldn't agree with you more. Clemens didn't show anything last yr to lead me to believe he could take us to a superbowl. And in pre season it was even worse. I got a good feeling about Ratliff, and don't care how young he is. Look at the rookie QB the Ravens have. He's tearing it up. Look at Cassell, he hadn't started a game since High School and he looks incredible out there.

I have a good feeling about Ratliff for some reason

Well we all do, he was amazing in preseason, but remember, it's all against third string receivers. If he came in against the Seahawks 32nd ranked pass defense in two weeks, I guarantee it wouldn't be a happy sight for us. He needs time and experience, maybe if we somehow clinch early Mangini can get him some PT against the Fins.

It was also with 3rd string recievers and 3rd string O-Linemen, no?
(Btw you mean 3rd string defensive backs)

I believe if Favre stays at least another year:), Clemons is gone. Mangini kept Ainge for a reason, he isn't happy with Kellen's progress. Ratliff and Ainge will duke it out for the backup spot. Ainge actually wasn't bad either for the very limited time he saw action. Both have potential, but they need to progress.
If Favre doesn't return we could be screwed:mad:, depending on when he decides. Most likely all good veterans will be long off the market if he decides to leave which would be later in the offseason given his previous decision times over the years in GB. If this happens, Clemons would be kept and we'd have Mangini's QB competition back in full swing. I don't see Tangini drafting another QB with potential, we have enough already.

Very good scenario, makes perfect sense! Do you think Favre sticks around for another year or what? I hope so, he's still an awesome QB and he has energized this team to a whole new level this season, that's for sure!

This may sound crazy, but how about Chad Pennington next year until we find a young replacement. I know hes on the Phins but they are loaded with young QB's and will be forced to give them a chance sooner or later. I think this would be a pretty funny turn of events. But, lets hope we dont have to worry about that and Favre will give us another great season.

The Jets need a Big QB going into a new stadium in 2010 and Farve won't be there. That's why I think they go after Cassell when his contract is up. I can see it now Cassell vs. Brady opening day 2010 and the Jets Win!!

I really think Ratliff has a ton of potential but if favre leaves after this year, I wouldn't feel confident with him being the starter. If he doesn't pan out we are screwed because this team is built to win now. Hopefully we win it all this year but if thats the case I think Favre is definately gone. If we loose in the playoffs I see him coming back for one more shot in which case I think we will have our answers as to whether or not Ratliff is ready to take over in 2010.

Cassell would be a colossal debacle... i don't want Patriot dregs. I say give Ratliff a shot and draft someone this year. I don't know about Ainge.

Actually I would like to see this scenario play out with Pennington. It won't
Pennington has another year left on his Fish contract. The Tuna will keep him for sure. Even if he is beat out by one of the young QB's, which I doubt, Tuna will still keep him. He is fairly cheap under his current contract, and had a good season. Not only that but Parcells likes veteran QB's.
Pennington is perfect for the Fish. He is a team guy, very smart, and unselfish. If he losses his starting job, he will almost be a player coach for the young QB's.
That is the way I had hoped last season was going to go for the Jets. Clemens winning the job cleanly in camp, and Pennington acting as his mentor. Clemens showed nothing in camp, and the Jets traded for Favre.
Do you really think that Pennington would come back to NY? Even if he were released? he was treated like crap here by the fans, and in the end by the FO.

I would hasten to characterize your comment as an astounding understatement. Further, I am inclined to characterize the addition of the grossly over-heralded Cassell to our Jets squad as a calamity of massive, some would say titanic, proportion.

I'd like to see more of Ratliff. I'm not a Clemens fan but I think it would interesting to see them battle it out. But hoping for the return of Favre!

Favre will return...to hunting in his beloved Mississippi.
